Abstract

Background: Breakfast is one of the important eating habits to meet daily energy needs, maintain blood glucose levels, improve concentration and learning ability of elementary school children. However, children's breakfast habits are still relatively low, one of which is influenced by a lack of knowledge about the importance of a healthy breakfast. Nutrition education with interesting and interactive learning media, such as puzzle media, can be an alternative to increase knowledge and form children's breakfast habits because it is in accordance with the learning characteristics of elementary school students who like play-while learning.
Objective: To determine the influence of nutrition education using puzzle media on the knowledge and habits of breakfast in students of State Elementary School 39 Sungai Ambawang.
Methods: This study used a pre-experimental design with a one group pretest-posttest approach. The research sample of 35 students in grades IV and V was selected using a simple random sampling technique. The intervention in the form of nutrition education using puzzle media was carried out for 3 weeks in 6 meetings. Data on breakfast knowledge and habits were collected using questionnaires before and after the intervention. Data analysis was carried out using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test.
Results: The results of the Wilcoxon test showed significant differences in knowledge (p=0.000) and breakfast habits (p=0.000) before and after the intervention. A total of 27 respondents experienced an increase in knowledge and 29 respondents experienced an increase in breakfast habits.
